Though I don't listen to them much but I LOVE Avenged Sevenfold's version of "Flash of the Blade"!

You?!?

I have a big soft spot for Van Canto's version of Fear of the Dark

... and indeed Van Canto in general, although I recognise they're a bit... niche ;)

Completely unnecessary profanity aside, I've always been a fan of Cradle of Filth's cover of HALLOWED BE THY NAME (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TlTl8UnqbI)... though that's a very bold song for a band to cover.

I thought Chris Jericho did a pretty fine job with Fozzy on Maiden songs too, all things considered. They've done THE PRISONER (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rESItSV0tNs), WHERE EAGLES DARE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sht_Lc0D1lc), THE EVIL THAT MEN DO (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTgOvv2ghBI), and, most recently, SUN AND STEEL (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mC4T7AdtRRw). Far from perfect, mind you, but we have the originals for that.

That was a really interesting cover! I've definitely never heard that one before.

Interesting choices. The Fozzy Prisoner is actually pretty good, except the weird intro.

Jennie, that was unique! :)

Speaking of "Fear of the Dark", though the video isn't much to look at, these 2 KILL it on the cello & violin: https://youtu.be/aaN3IMWxfKc (May be a good primer to show someone how beautiful Maiden music really is).

Van Canto do metal covers generally, and the only non-vocal instrument they have is a drummer; I love their version of Primo Victoria too

I like the Cradle of Filth Hallowed too, and you're right, it's a brave band that takes that one on.

What do you folks think about Metallica's cover of Remember Tomorrow? (CLICK HERE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WoowQbAgnA) if you haven't heard it)

It''s all right, but they don't really add anything to the original. For me, a cover has to be different enough to be worth listening to the cover over the original.

Am i the only one who doesnt or never liked any cover for any maiden song? The only one i could listen to was a nightcore version of hallowed be thy name... If u can call that a cover. I just find it that they ruin the songs.

You're probably not the only one, Nekro. I know other people who don't like cover versions at all. And that's OK, you know? The world would be really boring if we all had the same taste :)

While I'm not a Billy Corgan fan, his side project Djali Zwan did a fun acoustic cover of Number of the Beast that was in the soundtrack to the movie Spun:

Interesting thread  Well,no one can do justice to maiden's song,to be more precious, even maiden wasn't able to fill the shoe of 'Sir Dickinson' with blaze.
That being said, I like the Metallica's version of "remember tomorrow".

Anything the girls play - The Iron Maidens :)

Metallica ruined ''Remember Tomorrow'' IMHO - way better done by Anthrax (''Nothing'' single CD1)

Love the Djali Zwan version of The Number of the Beast... so different!

I figured people might have strong feelings about Metallica's cover of Remember Tomorrow. I thought it was alright, but nothing special. Better than their version of PROWLER (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUjaVxsMNVI) or their mockery of RUN TO THE HILLS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inwZhi0dhxk) anyway.

This one goes out to an unknown wedding band... allow me explain:

I was at a fancy wedding a few years back... and while we were all dining in the dining hall, the band was set up in the dance hall and playing some mellow dining music... jazz standards, musak... etc... Then I heard them break out something that I recognized. It took me a minute to put my finger on it because it was done up in the same light jazzy style as the rest of their 'dinner set'. It was The Flight of Icarus! It adapted really well to this style and noone else in the dining hall had even noticed, so I excused myself from the table, walked into the dance hall and stood in front of the band giving them a knowing glance. They smiled back at me - being the only person to realize that they just slipped Iron Maiden into their dinner set. As I walked away, I gave them the \m/

I'll never forget that.

I am an admitted Metallica zealot-turned-hater since the 1990s, and your fav is just as valid as anybody else's but I gave it a listen and it's dreadful to me. EDIT: I see that it has been brought up earlier in this thread and I am not alone in disliking it.

I remember the 5.98 EP days where classic punk songs were sent through the Metallica machine for a nice thrashy edge. Metallica always deserves credit for sending me backwards in time to learn the roots of metal. I also thought a number of the Metallica covers did more justice to the orignals, but not with all and in retrospect, it is something about the lack of Dynamics and perhaps unidimensionality of Metallica... and that perhaps old Diamondhead songs sounded a little better with growlier vocals and harder distortion, rather than it being a process of Metalica's genius or ability.

That metallica cover has an interesting, perhaps promising intro and then some faithful clean tones of the orignal that work nicely. Then Jaymz comes in and "Jaymzes" it up with his typical Rock/pop Pirate karaoke and the tight, uninspired distortion kicks on like sprinklers on a timer. This can be/has been a successful approach to other fast and technical pieces, but Remember Tomorrow is brooding and ethereal. Metallica did not take the song and make it theirs. They simply inserted their caricatures onto a classic, and where it worked better for say, "Stone Cold Crazy," it doesn't work here.

In terms of a successful execution of making Remember Tomorrow "Theirs," I would submit the following from Crowbar, one of my absolute favorite Maiden Covers:

I really like James' singing and the way he "Jaymzes" up is one of the main reasons why I love this cover. On the other hand Crowbar made this song more "theirs" than Metallica, I agree that. But that cover is not my cup of tea. Of course everyone has different tastes, it would be so boring if everyone loved the same thing :D

I also love this cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name (one of the best songs ever written imo) by Machine Head:

Testament's version of Powerslave is pretty rad, but my favorite cover is Rhapsody Of Fire's version of Flash of the Blade. I always thought the song was a bit bare bones, and the keyboards fill that in very nicely.

I cant believe ive never heard of this, just listened to it and imo its better than the actual song, but i think that the "youll die as you live..." part is a but off in rhapsody's version...

I rarely ever like covers at all but I have heard a couple lately that I like a lot. Powerslave by Anaal Nathrakh and Remember Tomorrow by Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats. I am a big fan of both of these bands but you may need to appreciate them already to like their versions. They make the songs sound like themselves which I think is a necessity if you are going to record a proper cover song. I also like that version of The Number of the Beast that is at the beginning of that movie 'Spun'

With the fear of being bashed, I would dare to say Sonata Arctica : Die with your boots on. That song is one of the few maiden song that I don't really like (original and cover) but I think it's more suitable to them than Iron Maiden.
As for the rest of the covers, no band can do a better job in a song over maiden.

No need to fear any bashing of opinions here! It's nice to see someone down in this poor, neglected section of the board again too, however fleeting! lol

I completely agree with you too: no cover comes close to being better than the original, in my opinion... with any band, actually.

I've always kept my eyes open for good Maiden covers, here are a few of my favorites:

Children of Bodom - Aces High. I listen to this one regularly. The pace is upped, makes for a great workout tune.

Iced Earth - Transylvania. Another quality cover, heavier than the original.

My fiancé plays guitar in an 80's Hair Metal/Metal Tribute band. This video is from one of his older bands (now defunct for the various reasons bands go defunct--largely some members that couldn't keep the partying until after they got off stage) and is an instrumental version of 'The Trooper'. (The band was between singers at the time this video was recorded.)
