View Full Version : The problems with the clan chat

I was so excited upon seeing that the clan chat is live. Until I used it.
50 char limit with spaces
Stupidly large avatars which are only our champions, so many people will have the exact same avatar.
At most four lines of chat visible at a time
The only use I see is to communicate to the rest of the clan a discord server, to have a proper chat over there.
Congrats, devs, you have spent time and money to create the "internet explorer" of chats: only useful to get a better chat elsewhere.

I wouldn't be so negative about it. I guess that Clan chat was probably designed for short conversations or better just for simple instructions to coordinate clan activities. Like any other thing at start some features may be improved but I definitely see it as a nice addition

50 chars aren't enough for anything. I wanted to get some opinions about what the heck is the "Top Contributor" and I had to split it in two.

Could I have written it in a shorter way? E.g. "What is top contributor?" Sure. But the point is that 50 chars with spaces has never been enough for any kind of communication. Not for SMS, not for Twitter, not for anything. It was probably enough for Morse code, and that's it.
Honestly, whoever proposed this limit, really dropped the ball. Especially since, with the large (albeit useless) avatar, the limit could easily be twice as big and the text would fit in the rectangle without any changes in the design.
These are base design problems, they aren't things that one can hope that will be fixed in the future.

Good question--what is top contributor? What does that even mean?

Heck if I know. For the Clan that I am in, the Iron Clan, everyone has 1 contribution currently (which doesn't make much sense, since it is supposed to be reset on Sunday, but anyway). One guy inexplicably has two contributions, and he is the top contributor.
By the way, a couple of weeks back, a guy had around 266 contributions.

Calm down, it's a beta game!
Good question--what is top contributor? What does that even mean?
Best I can figure out is who checks in the most... if everyone checks in equally, then it's whoever did it first OR.. the username that's first alphabetically.

I've noticed that the word "MEXICO" is censored in my clan chat. Why is that?

In ours it’s the word channel as in discord channel 🤪

hey guys,
good job with the clan chat feature three things have to change imo:
1. letter restriction is really bad, we need more letters
2. the chat has to be visible from the main cosmos screen and not only from the clan section
3. the censorship is really ******* ridiculous :)
aside that i like it
cheers

We DO like and USE our discord channel more 🤘🏻
and please Can allow you the punctuations in guild message? we can't even put the address of the discord... it's complicated to be able to communicate with that many restrictions!

The character limit is even worse when trying to write UTF-8 2-byte characters in Japanese, for example. This limits any message to 25 characters, which is about three or four words at the most. Quite silly. But I’m enjoying all the bugs and seeing the game evolve. It would be less exciting if everything worked perfectly all the time.

it's positive, finally we can have a chat, but it must be improved:
1) 50 char limit to 500
2) notify system for new messages
3) it might be useful if we can use chat system everywhere in the game, not only inside "Clan" window.

There is a risk of making chat too intrusive if it is everywhere, but these two could perhaps be combined. Adding a Clan button to the Victory screen would let us know there is a new message to go and check.
Here is a quick mock-up of that idea:

Fifty characters
Chat, like life, is too short
Why post like haiku? ;)
The problem is that too many characters is going to have TONS of scrolling going on. At 50, when I go into chat, I'm only seeing four posts. At more than a hundred or so, it's going to be impossible to use. But that's for better minds to figure out. Me, I want an indicator so we know when someone has actually posted something and a way to tag a user so, if you're replying to them, there's a quick way of referencing their ID. All told, though, this is a good first effort for a beta.

I see it as a way to send quick message to clan. For more in-depth chat, there are several chat apps clans/guilds use : Kik, line, twitch, discord, hangouts, WhatsApp, etc.... I don't have a fb,.among here, a couple chat apps, that's about as sociable as I get. I guess you can say that I am apart of the anti-social network. So as a 50 character chat for clan message can be tedious, but it also opened up chat options outside of the limited chat. It's better than nothing, because it will be used for strategy in the guild, just having to post more to explain or express a few sentences. One thing I do like, translator which is something that I haven't seen in prior chats that were in-game you had to have someone translate it for you. I'm okay with the limit for clan or maybe player to player could use 150 character and you so.have to think about if they do decide to have a full global in-game chat.

this was a complete waste of time and resources. it has completely failed on every possible level. 1000% useless. Way to waste the limited capabilities you have available to you.

It's certainly not terrible; it could be improved though. I think a good idea to combat the long scrolling for larger messages would be too compact the messages at so many characters and then when touched reveal the message in full. Several phone apps I have utilized have this feature to compact conversations that are too large or span many lines.
The translation feature was a great idea. It really expands the possibilities of speaking to people of different languages in the clan chat. Hopefully they take into account the censoring issues as well, since those seem to be causing people some grievances. All in all not as bad a system as I thought it would be.

chat feature is fine. seems trivial to complain about the 50 character limit. what do you want to chat about anyways? right now clan is limited to mostly checking in. once the clan events roll out, keeping messages short and to the point will be ideal.

I think it’s fine just having the option to say hello and check in with each other. Not everyone wants to sit around and recite the Gettysburg Address to people while playing a mobile game. I’m glad to have some likeminded people who share my love of the game and all, but I get plenty of human interaction throughout my day, so not really looking to Chatty Kathy it up while enjoying my Maiden fix. As far needing some super social media application to handle Clan activities? I may be way off base, but I doubt very seriously it will be thirty player simultaneous action packed battles. It’ll start with “do chore x 10,000 times as a clan”, followed by “take your own personal whack at the big bad raid boss before the weekly timer resets”. I’d be amazed if it were anymore advanced than that. Seriously, we don’t even have real pvp. We have a version of player picked Gauntlet, at best.

I do have to add that the censorship is completely asinine though. Wonder how the boys in the band feel about censorship on any level.

With their frequent on-stage mentions of unity and love, they'd probably not be bothered by any sort of policy/feature that prevented people using slurs. As for regular swearing, that's probably more of an App Store rating and classification kinda thing. *shrug*

Ah, I wasn’t thinking of store policies. In that particular area I would suspect you are correct. As far as personal attacks via slurs and such, that shouldn’t be allowed in any format.

Only reason I'd want chat to have more characters in the limit is to help out newer players who don't understand certain mechanics. Don't know if y'all knew, but this game can be a pain in the rear sometimes.

50 chars is just a little too short IMO. 100 would be better, esp for those who aren't english speakers (cos of unicode using 2 normal chars for 1 unicode char).
Being able to scroll back in the chat is nice, but I don't see what sets the limit (seems to be 25 or 26 atm for me)? Is this time based, number of msgs based, X messages before the last msg you sent, ???
Having limited reactions to a msg might be useful. eg: You could ask someone to complete something and then hit a button on the msg to effectively say "Done", without having to actually reply (and thereby not using a reply spot).
Do need something that shows up on the main game screens that there's new chat msgs though, without actually showing the clan msgs on the main screens (otherwise it's going add lots more load to the servers). Needs to be different to the usual number marker though, as I might not care as much about clan msgs as other clan things (like check-in).
