View Full Version : Changing my Trooper points spending strategy from souls to skills.

I've yet to evolve beyond the 4* barrier with my characters, even with the dungeons. I find it's because I've been spending my Trooper points unwisely. Until now, I've been spending my points on souls of all classes, hoping for the big win, a 5* legend I can add to my team. However, this is not working, so now I'm diverting my funds to buying skill shards to power up my Eddies and best allies, allowing them to max their base skills along with talismans in order to finally defeat every world in every difficulty (still lacking Battlefield Madness and Underworld Hard and Madness), as well as the rest of the upper level dungeons, in order to increase my chances of earning the elusive 3* evo shards. I only wish I had done so from the start.
Anyone else have a similar experience in their point spending?

for me this is the only plausible way to spend the trooper points, your strategy is very reasonable, if you ask me :-)

It does make sense in terms of a dependable way to benefit from trooper points. That said, when I was buying one of each items from the shop weekly with my trooper points I landed a Pharaoh Eddie from a sentinel rare soul and that was a total game changer for me. I know that's total luck, but...

i aim for assassin/gunner souls cuz i need some of those, but skill shards are pretty much the best deal.
Btw the drop rate of chars may be low, but have u ever played wow? The drop rates for mounts and good gear is like 1% and some only drop on heroic... (which u can only do once daily), get urself a golden horseshoe, theyre a big waste of money :)

I have been chain-buying sentinel souls with my trooper points for the past month... I must have bought 20 - all in hopes of landing a Pharaoh Eddie. Nothing for me. I thought if I focused on Sentinel souls, it would bound to come up. Nope. You're lucky BillLion!

Idk, it's funny. Some characters you wouldn't look at twice at mid game, and all of a sudden at end game they start looking fantastic at end game: the wicker dog King/Queen, wicker man Eddie, that green golem thing you get at the start, and that sort. I'm a firm believer that a truly free to play player can come out to end game with a good package of characters and talismans without spending any money, or investing huge time. You can get rare souls in the dungeons too for those elusive native five star chars. I feel like skill shards are the best value for your time invested for trooper points, and I have shifted to doing the same even though I drool sometimes over other people's gunner and assassin characters. At the end of the day, buying souls is like a chip for a slot machine.

Thanks for the quick feedback, fellas. :)
I kept hoping for a Cyborg Eddie, simply because he's always been my favorite version. I treat this game like Iron Maiden Pokemon, gotta catch 'em all, but it's been hurting my gameplay, so time to get serious!

I think skills is the way to go also whish I had done that. I have been focusing on trying to get a general and still no luck.

By the way my cyborg came from a regular rare soul, not a gunner/assassin one.
That was before they ruined everything drop-wise, including good characters from rare souls

I managed to get a Mummy Eddie from a common soul once, which was a nice surprise.

Total luck! Now I'm waiting for Tom's luck w/ Cyborg Eddie! ;)

Yeah, I really want a Cyborg Eddie first and foremost...
I think I'll take everyones advice now and give up hope... and just buy skill shards. It makes sense. I've bought enough hopes and dreams (gunner/assasin & sentinel rare souls) to prove to me that it's a total wild goose chase.
Right now I am going to stockpile trooper badges because I heard somewhere that we'll need 1500 trooper badges to instantly buy a new Eddie character in an upcoming update (I forget who posted that, or if it's even legitimate, but I figured I'd try to keep some in stock just in case). I'm at 5000 right now.

Skills is OK if you have a character that you use almost every level <cough>Blue allied soldier</cough>. I find that I swap characters around a hell of a lot on Rifts, and would struggle to get enough skill shards to scatter around and make a difference. Based on that I'm indulging my inner gambler and grabbing souls until I get another must-include character to skill up.

Skill shards is the least pain in the a$$ from all options, that's all.
Its already very hard to skill-level a Eddie...I've only thrown 13 to Carriage rider and 12 to the cyborg and missing another 12 OMG
To get all skills for what I've got i'll need 4 years :D

#1 for me too.
So connecting it back to the topic, I always buy 1 skill shard a week and use the rest for rare souls. This week I'm deviating because I'm going to open 3 assassin/gunner rare souls at once so I can be triply disappointed at not getting Cyborg Eddie again.

I'm with you man. I'm levelling rainmaker Eddie's skills right now. The bad thing is all his skills need to be upgraded!

I gave up with soldier Eddie and the skill shards, I'm going to dump them inti the hellhound next, then probably Carriage rider. Besides the fact, I find soldier Eddie is epic for farming and doesn't need the skills increased. Samurai and Carriage rider are not nearly as good at farming, but they're way better boss killers imo compared to soldier -> they don't have the skill shard black holes either.

I only use my points on skill shards. After several disappointing results from rare souls I learned my lesson. Plus, they really can make a difference on some characters.
There is really no reason to buy souls over shards.

Buying souls is like playing the lottery.
Buying skill shards is like buying real estate.
It's a no-brainer when you think of it like that.

This is my take in the matter. I bought Skill Shards until I leveled up my main characters at the moment (2 eddies and my 3 other char) that will be my main team. then I switched it to souls when I need a new character to work on.

Here's my strategy regarding trooper badges:
1) Early Game -- Use on character shards until I had characters that could get me through end game (wicker man and Sentinel Golden Sun)
2) Mid Game - Use on skill shards to build up Solider Eddie and main allies
3) End Game - Build up to 100k trooper badges to spend on next major update (if I manage more than 100K, then I will buy skill shards with the overage)
Note: I have the following Eddies: Soldier, Eddie, Run to the Hills, Visions, Wickerman, Mummy, Speed of Light. I do not have Corrupt General, Nomad, Alliance General, or Warrior CotD. I have finished all levels with 3 stars. While I wish I had the marquee Eddies (Pharaoh, carriage rider, samurai, cyborg), I am happy to accumulate loot until the next major update. I figure the Eddies I want will be more easily obtainable then.
Every player's goal should be to do what it takes to advance without needlessly spending trooper badges, runes, or credits.

The skill shards for sale in the troopers points shop are 5 grand... HOW the HELL is anybody making enough trooper points to buy those all the time? I wish you could buy gold, ironite, or even evo shards with tropper points, because otherwise those points are pratically useless to me.

Play all your troopers daily and you can buy 2 per week with points to spare.

In the beginning, I enjoyed the chance of getting a rare trooper using trooper points, but after 4 or 5 straight duds from the rare assassin stones I have converted to spending exclusively on skill shards. The guaranteed benefit of building a trooper with a skill shard far outweighs the slim chance of getting something that isn’t absolute trash.
So I agree with the original poster a 100%.

I too have switched to just farming Battlefield Madness to improve Talismans and buying Skill Shards, and it's made a huge difference. The skill shards especially have taken Soldier Eddie's Barrage to levels where I can one-shot some waves while auto-farming, and the value of improved chance of Taunt on Sentinel Soul Demons is well worth it.
