Skill doesn't work?

I have the 5* pharaoh king dog. His basic skill is pharaohs curse, which hits an enemy with magic damage. I am finding that half of the time when I attack with him, no damage is dealt. Does anyone have any idea why?

Just quit using him and now using 5* child of the damned instead :)
