Upgrading relics

In the information screen about relics, it says:
"Every Relic is acquired at level 1. You can then improve the Relic by purchasing or earning the next level of it to make it stronger, up to the Relic’s maximum level."
How will we be able to earn the next level? In the far future Gauntlet update..?

Note after a purchase the price for that Relic goes up... purchase it again to get the next level of that Relic... and the price goes up again.... and purchase again for the next level.. repeat.

Yes, that would be purchasing the upgrade; what I'm wondering is how the "or earning" bit will function.

I do not think that the „earning“ feature is in place yet. May be something for future game mode specific relics, I would guess. But who knows...
