Don't delete them, it's only if you have duplicate chars in the active team. Those in your inventory don't affect this issue.

In my case it was due to "duplicate character" while using Troopers.
If I pick a 5* Soldier Eddie as a trooper my own SE suffers roughly 50% damage reduction and using a 4* SE it's about a third...

He is ok to use as 3* too, getting him to 4* will ofc increse his survivability and damage output
