Not only after nerf or major updates, all the time would be even better.

It would help new players, sacrifice, and would make us experiment much more with different toons.
I imagine a mechanism could exist that allows for the recovery of some of the precious shards, skill shards are a valuable asset and surely Devs would like to be careful about adjustments to avoid excessive handling or abuse, however having an option around it (like for new players totally messing up) could help, maybe a game of dice with Eddie himself, sacrifice your character roll the dice and see what happens.

    Well said.

There have been many suggestions on reclaiming skill shards from characters, but this is by far the best argument for it. With the constant and on-going equalization of characters (aka nerfing), it seems absolutely logical that we be able to redistribute skill shards from characters that are no longer what they are when we invested such a rare item into them.

I agree with others (and even with the devs, to an extent) that we don't want to depreciate the value of such a rare item, which is why a free skill shard reset should be available following tuning updates only.

In many games I have played in the past, the dev team would often reimburse people after they nerfed an item/character enough to make people regret their initial investment. I feel that if our devs adopted a similar stance here, the relationship between them and the players could only get better as so many people have wanted this option for a while now. I know that I personally will shelve my blue bat after the April update (and I am completely okay with him being changed), and would love a way to remove his shards and give them to a toon I've been wanting to try out in PVP.

Devs, please hear us out on this one. This is something a lot of us greatly care about. We are not asking for skill shards to be removable in all cases (as that would ruin their worth), we merely want to be able to have the option to remove them after a balance update where certain characters get nerfed. I sincerely hope you guys take our concerns here to heart.
You are right, these scenarios are common to many games and a reimburse of the items or a similar value exchange is an accepted way about it and in my personal experience it works, if your favorite character was nerfed you at least will have a chance to lessen the impact, especially with shards being so valuable and slow to acquire, it would feel like an improvement instead of something that takes from the experience, thanks.
